The role

We are recruiting an experienced Director of Legal Services and Data Protection Officer (DPO) to provide leadership of the Legal Services Team and to provide expert advice on legal and information governance matters to the University.

We are looking for an experienced Solicitor or CILEX with information governance expertise who can clearly communicate and advise on the legal, compliance and data privacy requirements of the University to support delivery of its strategic objectives and protect the interests of the University’s data subjects.

Reporting to the University Secretary, and working as part of the University’s Senior Leadership Team, this role is pivotol to ensuring compliance with legal and data protection requirements relevant to a higher education corporation.

With leadership responsibility for a small specialist team of solicitors, legal advisors and information governance advisors, this role is critical to shaping the legal and data protection strategy for the university.

Directorate of Governance, Legal and Compliance

The Governance, Legal and Compliance Directorate plays a key role in Sheffield Hallam's ongoing success, with responsibility for supporting the decision-making bodies of the University and for providing information, advice and direction on legal and compliance issues.

Legal Services provides specialist advice, support and guidance to academic and professional services staff across the University to enable compliance with data protection legislation. 

The team also manages responses to Freedom of Information requests, subject access requests, and data security incidents. 

The team works with academic, research, and professional services staff to ensure compliant handling of the personal data of students, staff, applicants, alumni, participants in research studies, and other data subjects.
