Job description

We are currently seeking an experienced, highly qualified, and passionate individual to join our team as a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer on the Secondary PGCE Science Programme. The successful candidate will support trainee teachers as part of the Secondary PGCE team, lead biology subject and pedagogical development, contribute to the core curriculum, and mark and moderate Level 7 academic work. This is a part-time role at 0.5 FTE.

About the role

Secondary Science is an established PGCE course at Bath Spa University, which continues to grow. We recruit groups of students with a range of experiences, specialist skills, and knowledge. The post holder will assist in managing the science PGCE working closely with other science academic tutors, combining this with academic tutor responsibilities. The post holder will also lead on subject knowledge and pedagogy teaching, particularly in the area of biology but may also contribute to the teaching of Bath Spa Teachers from other disciplines where appropriate. Other responsibilities include contributing to our core curriculum, exploring a range of whole school issues pertinent to teacher trainees. The post holder will be fully supported by the Programme Director, who manage the operation of the wider Secondary PGCE programme.

The role includes moderation visits to schools during school training, involving an element of quality assurance of training mentors.  The post holder will be responsible for providing academic and pastoral support for Bath Spa Teachers, guiding them to become excellent teachers.

About you

  • Qualified Teacher Status and a relevant first degree
  • Recent successful Secondary Science teaching experience across the secondary age phase
  • Experience of mentoring and/or teaching within initial teacher education
  • Sound knowledge of current approaches to teaching Secondary Science
  • Excellent ICT skills including working with e-learning tools
  • An excellent teacher with demonstrable interest in pedagogic innovation
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills

Additional information

This is a part-time, 0.5 FTE role

The postholder will also be required to, at times, work unsociable hours, e.g.: Open events for prospective candidates, some early starts and late returns on school visits.
