Fixed-term: the funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

We are seeking a full-time proactive and enthusiastic IT Technician to join our department's technical support teams. In this key role, you will provide first and second line support for a wide range of IT services, ensuring the smooth running of systems and infrastructure. You'll be the first point of contact for IT-related queries, helping resolve routine technical issues, escalating where appropriate, and supporting departmental users with professionalism and care.

The postholder will work 3 days a week at the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy (https://www.msm.cam.ac.uk) and 2 days a week at the Department of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology (https://www.ceb.cam.ac.uk).

The two departments are located in the West Cambridge Site and are next door to each other, so there is no commute.

As part of a collaborative team, you'll also assist with hardware/software installations, troubleshooting, and network maintenance. You'll be involved in documenting procedures, supporting departmental IT projects, and providing cover for Computer Officers when needed.

What we're looking for:

-Recent experience in IT support or service delivery

- Knowledge of a specific IT area (e.g., desktop support, networking)

- Strong communication and problem-solving skills

- Ability to manage and prioritise tasks independently

- A recognised IT qualification (e.g., HND/HNC or equivalent experience)

The successful candidate will be used to working in a busy environment whilst maintaining high levels of technical support. Previous experience of working in an operational level to deliver a technical solution within an IT support team is essential.

The role involves day-to-day contact with academic and administrative staff and students and requires the ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people. The successful candidate will be highly organised and possess methodical working methods. On-the-job training in the use of the University's IT systems will be provided.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to deepen their technical skills in a supportive academic environment. You'll also benefit from being part of the wider University IT community, with opportunities for training and knowledge sharing.

Informal enquiries about the role can be addressed to Tony Gledhill (Computer Officer at the Department of Materials Science & Metallurgy) by emailing computer-officer@msm.cam.ac.uk.
