You will work with Professor Lasse Rempe within the Department of Mathematics to conduct original research in the dynamics of transcendental functions of one complex variable. A particular focus will be the understanding and classification of post-critically finite holomorphic maps defined on simply-connected domains (which may or may not be the entire complex plane). With a PhD (or close to completion) in Mathematics, you will have a strong background in holomorphic dynamics or a related area.
You will be expected to undertake research in holomorphic dynamics and related areas. You will also have opportunities to participate in postgraduate student supervision and undergraduate teaching activities at the Department of Mathematics. You will engage with the activities of the wider Dynamical Systems group at Manchester, including seminars and workshops held in the Department.
The Department of Mathematics (www.maths.manchester.ac.uk) is one of the larger integrated mathematics schools/departments in the UK, with approximately 80 permanent academic staff, 30 research assistants and fellows, 1,200 undergraduate students and 250 postgraduate students. Based in the purpose-built Alan Turing Building, the Department provides a friendly, supportive and collegial environment that fosters world-class research and teaching. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 90% of the Department’s research was rated as internationally excellent or world-leading.
