PhD Studentship: Open Radio Access Network (ORAN) for Distributed Edge Computing Orchestration in 6G

Cranfield University

Qualification Type: PhD
Location: Cranfield
Funding for: UK Students, EU Students, International Students
Funding amount: Not Specified
Hours: Full Time
Placed On: 10th April 2025
Closes: 30th April 2025

Overview:

Self-funded PhD opportunity in 6G as part of major project hub, further funding possible subject to progress of project and student. Focus on native AI in 6G systems with experimental testbed and national scale experimentation.

6G will bring new levels of native AI inside the telecommunication network, orchestrating resources for both the telecommunication network and for the end-user application areas. Cranfield is part of the national testbed for 6G, researching in the following areas of interest:

  • Real-time specification of 6G telecommunication and edge computing services using Large Language Models (LLMs).
  • Orchestrating AI/ML pipelines in 6G.
  • Developing certification and checking processes for code inside ORAN 6G.

The research will be a combination of software engineering, radio experimentation and validation, and machine learning.

You will be working world-leading scholar, Professor Weisi Guo, on the topic partnered with one of other leading universities in 6G.

Funding for studentship support can be possible subject to continued funding and progress in research. The hub that funds our ecosystem is: https://cheddarhub.org

The work is envisioned to have great impact on design and development of intelligent AI/ML orchestration algorithms in real 6G experimentation test beds.

The applicant is envisioned to further enhance and develop world class skills in AI and Machine Learning and Communication Networks with application to hard and challenging AI problems providing a great skill set for employability after the degree in both industry but also academia as well.
