Overview: Fully Funded, £23,237 Tax-Free Stipend + £7,000 for Research & Travel, Co-funded by MBDA

Are you driven by cutting-edge research and excited to shape the future of energy transfer technologies? Join the EPSRC Energy Transfer Technologies Doctoral Training Hub and embark on a fully funded PhD focused on advancing our understanding of high-energy electromagnetic propagation in challenging environments.

Based at Cranfield University, this project investigates how energy is transmitted over long distances in poor weather using electro-optical (EO), infrared (IR), and radar systems, with the goal of enhancing energy transfer technologies for real-world applications in defence and beyond. The project is co-funded by MBDA, a global leader in advanced defence systems, who will provide supervision, mentorship, and placement opportunities.

Project Overview

This PhD will explore how adverse atmospheric conditions affect high-energy signal propagation and how to overcome these limitations to deliver energy effectively and accurately at long range.

Research Objectives:

  • Model and simulate the effects of poor weather on high-energy propagation.
  • Analyse frequency and sensing modality impacts on transmission using EO, IR, and radar.
  • Explore the benefits of pulsed vs. continuous wave (CW) techniques to maximise energy transfer.

This is a hands-on project offering the chance to develop advanced modelling and simulation skills while gaining deep expertise in electromagnetic propagation, sensor technology, and applied physics.

Why Cranfield?

Cranfield University is a recognised leader in defence, aerospace, and engineering research. As part of the Cranfield Defence and Security (CDS) group, you’ll study within a unique academic and applied environment—closely connected to UK defence through the Defence Academy at Shrivenham and a wide industrial network.

You’ll be immersed in a collaborative research culture that prioritises real-world impact, interdisciplinary training, and strong industry partnerships.

Key Benefits

  • Fully funded 4-year PhD: No tuition fees + £23,237 annual tax-free stipend.
  • £7,000 per year for travel, conferences, training, and research equipment.
  • Industrial collaboration: Work directly with MBDA, including an industry placement.
  • World-class training through the EPSRC Hub, including technical, research, and leadership skills.
  • Cohort experience: Join a vibrant community of PhD students across the UK, with in-person and online events, peer learning, and networking opportunities.
  • Flexible study options, including part-time pathways.

Candidate Profile

We’re looking for motivated, curious candidates with:

  • A minimum of an upper second-class UK honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering field.
  • A passion for applied research in areas such as laser interactions, RF technologies, plasma physics, or materials science.
  • The ability to obtain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance (UK Nationals only).

We strongly encourage applications from candidates of diverse backgrounds, including women, BAME applicants, disabled students, and those from low-income or non-traditional educational pathways. The Hub is committed to creating an inclusive and supportive research environment.

Project Details

  • Start Date: 6 October 2025
  • Application Deadline: 30 July 2025
