College Lecturer and Researcher in Politics

Merton College proposes to appoint a permanent College Lecturer and Researcher in Politics from 1 October 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The main duties of the post will be:

• For undergraduate degrees involving politics:
  1. to teach undergraduates for an average of 12 weighted hours per week in full term;
  2. to share responsibility for the organisation of Politics teaching and course-related administration;

• to act as Director of Studies to a number of students;

1. to provide study skills and pastoral support;
2. (ii) To participate in Merton’s access and outreach activities and admissions exercises (undergraduate and postgraduate);
3. (iii) To participate in wider college activities;
4. (iv) To engage in advanced Politics research and its dissemination.

The successful candidate will teach the Practice of Politics component of the first-year ‘Introduction to Politics’ module and, for the Final Honour School (second- and third-year), the core Political Sociology paper and at least one other core paper from Comparative Government, British Politics & Government since 1900, Theory of Politics, International Relations. The ability to provide effective tutorial teaching to high-achieving undergraduates is essential.
