The Department of Biochemistry, a large and flourishing academic community that enjoys a world-class reputation for both teaching and research, is embedded in the School of the Biological Sciences. Biochemistry, one of the largest Departments in the University, is based in two centrally located buildings housing around 500 staff and students. The Department houses a mix of laboratories, teaching and office space.
A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and efficient individual to join the Department in a management role, and take responsibility for the IT service and infrastructure.
Based in a busy and friendly professional services team, and reporting to the Departmental Administrator & General Manager, the successful candidate will join a dynamic and dedicated team, taking responsibility for the creation of the IT vision of the Department and its delivery through a team of IT professionals.
Through a combination of project work and the delivery of day-to-day services, the role holder will ensure that IT creates the digital environment to enable the Department to fulfill its goals in research, teaching and learning, as well as providing the tools to support the delivery of the department's administrative functions.
This highly visible role supports, influences and delivers a wide range of facilities and interacts with colleagues at all levels. Other key contacts will be the University Information Service (UIS), the School of the Biological Sciences (SBS) and its departments, procurement and equipment providers.
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate significant experience in the definition, approach, facilitation and delivery of medium-scale projects. The successful candidate will show evidence of strong operational leadership in the design, procurement, installation, operation, maintenance, and effective use of IT infrastructure and its performance.
A working knowledge of a majority the following will be required: the design, maintenance and operation of [Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS] clients, networking, relevant server environment/s, centralised authentication service/s, automated installation of OS and software deployment, virtualisation and web.
Applicants should be educated to degree level (or equivalent) and have significant technical and management experience in either higher education or a commercial environment.
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, clear and concise communication and financial acumen. Experience in scientific computing, including high performance computing, would be beneficial.
