This research aims to explore innovative applications of wearable and wheelchair-based technologies to support Para athletes in monitoring performance. It will assess the transferability of these technologies for training prescription and performance monitoring. By collecting biomechanical and physiological data during wheelchair propulsion in daily mobility, training, and competition, the project seeks to enhance understanding of training intensity, performance optimisation, and injury prevention. Loughborough University, a leader in Para sports, will work with our UK Para athlete network and external partners to extend knowledge in Para sports research.
Research Question: Which wearable and wheelchair-based technologies can effectively support Para sports practice to enhance performance?
The study will measure Para athletes’ external load (upper-body biomechanics) and internal load (physiology) during daily activities, training, and competition. This will address the research question through two aspects:
Entry requirements:
Applicants must have, or expect to have, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) with a UK master's degree (with average programme mark of no less than 65%) or international equivalent.

The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £19,237 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.
