This research aims to explore innovative applications of wearable and wheelchair-based technologies to support Para athletes in monitoring performance. It will assess the transferability of these technologies for training prescription and performance monitoring. By collecting biomechanical and physiological data during wheelchair propulsion in daily mobility, training, and competition, the project seeks to enhance understanding of training intensity, performance optimisation, and injury prevention. Loughborough University, a leader in Para sports, will work with our UK Para athlete network and external partners to extend knowledge in Para sports research.

Research Question: Which wearable and wheelchair-based technologies can effectively support Para sports practice to enhance performance?

The study will measure Para athletes’ external load (upper-body biomechanics) and internal load (physiology) during daily activities, training, and competition. This will address the research question through two aspects:

  1. Biomechanics: Using a wheelchair ergometer or SMARTwheel to measure applied forces, velocity, and power. Joint and muscle load will be predicted using 3D kinematics and force data. Wearable devices (Apple, Garmin watches), IMU-sensors, and smart sleeves will be validated for push detection and monitoring. Tracking athletes longitudinally will provide insights into high-risk activities associated with overload injuries.
  2. Physiology: Integrating wearable physiological biomarkers (heart rate, respiration rate, local oxygenation, blood flow, skin temperature) to quantify the effects of push frequencies and external load on internal load. This data will offer insights into performance, training intensity, risk factors, and real-time feedback. The goal is to develop a feedback system for personalised performance and technique insights.
