Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Computer Science

The newly established School of Computer Science at Northumbria University is seeking new Assistant Professors/Lecturers to contribute to the Department’s core activities in research and teaching. Working within a relevant area of computing, computer or information sciences, you will be responsible for contributing to an exceptional student experience through the delivery of teaching, research, knowledge exchange and business and enterprise engagement activity.

About the team

The School of Computer Science at Northumbria University is a vibrant, growing and research-intensive environment. Our core research strengths include Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomous systems, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Digital Civics, Networks and Cybersecurity, Digital Education, and Health Informatics. We hold a strong portfolio of UKRI investments, including one of the recently funded UKRI AI Centres for Doctoral Training focused on citizen-centred approaches to AI. Our cybersecurity research has been repeatedly recognised as an NCSC/EPSRC Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR). The School is based in an award-winning, purpose-built facility at the heart of Northumbria’s City Campus in Newcastle upon Tyne. We provide research-informed, high-quality teaching to over 1,500 students across Computer and Data Science, AI, Cybersecurity and Networks, Games, and Business Computing, from Foundation to Doctoral level. Our facilities include specialist labs in Networks, Cybersecurity, and Games, along with a new Higgs High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster. We foster a collaborative, diverse, and inclusive research culture, supporting academic career development through mentorship, funding opportunities, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

About you

We are looking to strengthen our academic team and welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates for Assistant Professor / Lecturer positions in any relevant area of Computer Science. However, we are particularly interested in applicants with expertise in: trustworthy and responsible AI, participatory design for digital services, human-AI and human-robot collaboration, digital transformation in government, big data and social media, games user research, more-than-human centred approaches to digital design, and digital health and social care. 

Applicants should hold a doctoral qualification and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge and subject expertise in a core area of computing, computer or information sciences, or related areas. Experience of designing, delivering, and assessing high quality teaching and learning practice as well as evidence of high-quality research outputs are essential. For Lecturer grade we would expect an emerging publication record in top journals. For the Assistant Professor role, we expect an established and growing publication record in high-impact journals, with an ambitious research plan including grant capture activities.
