The role

An exciting opportunity to contribute towards the quality of life for men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer in this research project which is crucial to inform health care practice. After initial studies, hydrogel spacers are currently used in a significant number of cancer care departments, in the UK and globally, in order to reduce some of the side-effects of radiotherapy treatment to the prostate gland. The National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) requires further data about the efficacy of this hydrogel spacer device now that it is more widely used. The OASIS Study (SpaceOAR Post-Market Registry Study) is a ‘real-world’ research study designed to comprehensively collect this information, working with cancer care colleagues in the UK, our health care colleagues in France who will be concurrently running this project and the developers of the hydrogel spacer device in the USA.

The School of Health and Social Care is looking for a talented and ambitious research fellow to join us to work on this project. Irritative effects on the bowel, to a varying degree, caused by radiotherapy to the prostate gland is a side effect experienced by a significant number of men. The OASIS Study will investigate further the efficacy of the SpaceOAR hydrogel spacer in protecting the bowel from the effects of radiotherapy to the prostate gland.

You will work with the Programme Director and core study team to facilitate high quality clinical research including the implementation of the study protocol, consenting of research participants, conducting and managing collection of research data, handling clinical queries, produce meaningful outputs including contributing to publications, and supporting the project delivery team to ensure that the required outcome data is delivered to NICE. The role will require frequent collaboration with study sites across the NHS. This role is an ideal development opportunity for those who are looking to work in clinical trials or project management in a healthcare/research setting or those who are seeking to transition from an NHS-based research role into an academic environment.

We offer a diverse range of benefits and opportunities to pursue a rewarding and fulfilling career in a supportive environment and the successful candidate will be supported to develop their own grant ideas and build up their own research portfolio.
