We have an exciting opportunity to join a prestigious academic research department collaborating with industry leaders and global developers of Automated Driving Systems. This position is part of a growing research portfolio focused on the safety of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Automated Driving Systems (ADS). The role involves conducting Functional Safety analysis while working closely with industry and academic partners to enhance safety protocols and methodologies.
Role Overview:
The position requires expertise in international safety standards such as ISO 26262, ISO 21448, ISO/SAE 21434, and ISO TS 5083 to develop system safety cases for ADAS and ADS in various Operational Design Domains (ODD). The role also involves safety and failure analysis methods, including:
- Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
- Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP)
- Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA)
This role is part of the Safe Autonomy Research Group at the University of Warwick, contributing to cutting-edge research in automated transport safety.
Lead Engineer – Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct research into functional and system safety for ADAS and ADS by reviewing literature and engaging with key stakeholders.
- Organise and lead workshops with industry and academic collaborators to define research opportunities.
- Develop scalable functional safety methodologies compliant with ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and ISO/SAE 21434.
- Perform safety analysis using FMEA, FTA, HAZOP, and STPA to mitigate system risks.
- Develop system and operational safety cases using frameworks like Goal Structured Notation (GSN) and Assurance 2.0.
- Provide guidance to the university and partners on all aspects of functional safety within the project.
- Represent the research team in senior management meetings, providing updates and aligning project goals with industry objectives.
- Publish research findings in international journals and present at conferences.
- Ensure project milestones and deliverables align with funding body requirements.
- Represent the university at national and international events, providing reports to the research team.
Person Specification:
- A good honours degree in a relevant engineering or technical discipline.
- Extensive experience in Functional Safety within the automotive sector, particularly in ISO 26262 and ISO 21448 applications.
- Proven ability to develop functional safety concepts, safety requirements, and architecture for ADAS and ADS.
- Experience conducting Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA).
- Strong background in developing system safety cases using GSN and Assurance 2.0.
- Familiarity with cybersecurity standards like ISO/SAE 21434 and ISO TS 5083.
- Excellent project management skills with the ability to deliver complex research programs within deadlines.
- Experience working on collaborative research projects involving academia and industry.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present research findings effectively.
