Research Fellow

University of Southampton - Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering

Location: Southampton
Salary: £36,130 to £38,249 per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 2nd April 2025
Closes: 23rd April 2025
Job Ref: 3058025DA

Full Time Fixed Term until 29/10/2027

Looking for an opportunity to work at the interface between the aircraft industry and academia on the numerical simulation and design of future air transportation systems? We have an exciting opportunity to do just that in one of the UK’s most dynamic centres for engineering research and education.

Working with industrial partners, you will develop and contribute to new areas of research that will benefit society by advancing technologies that will underpin the design of the next generation of transport aircraft. Specifically, you will develop, test, and industrialise algorithms designed to simulate and optimise the operation and design of aircraft systems, subject to complex, real-world constraints.

You will join a growing team of engineers working on a range of digital design technologies, ranging from AI to novel geometry modelling techniques. While this position is initially for a fixed term period, depending on the success of the role, opportunities will be explored to extend it beyond this initial period.

To be successful you will need a track record of developing, testing, and delivering high quality code to tight deadlines, to solve engineering problems. Ideally you will also have experience in numerical modelling and analysis, particularly in optimisation and/or complex mechanical systems simulation, as well as having a solid understanding of aircraft design and aviation in general. You will hold a PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in aeronautical or mechanical or software engineering, physics, or in computer science/numerical analysis.
