Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a full-time or part-time position as Researcher/Senior Researcher in Comparative Constitutionalism, specializing in Europe and/or the MENA region (2+2 years, with the possibility of a tenure track), at the Institute for the Interregional Study of Constitutionalism (IISC).

The Faculty of Law, established in 1348 as one of the university’s four founding faculties, is now the largest accredited law faculty in the Czech Republic, with over 4,500 students.

We are seeking a candidate whose research, from a comparative perspective, examines the constitutional conditions that foster the emergence of a constitution-based public discourse and explores the relationship between constitutional identity and collective identity. The successful applicant will join a multidisciplinary research team studying constitutionalism as a foundation for collective identity and community.

The initial contract will be for two years. Upon a successful review, the candidate may receive a contract extension of up to two years, with a pathway to a permanent position.

Your Tasks 

  1. Conduct comparative analysis of the jurisprudence of constitutional courts on constitutional identity in selected European and MENA countries.
  2. Analyze the conception of constitutional identity.
  3. Contribute to the development of a theory of constitution-based identity.
  4. Identify and analyze the variables of constitution-based identity in constitutional systems in the selected countries.
  5. Examine the interaction between local values, constitution, and human rights (including international human rights law) in the selected countries.
  6. Collaborate closely with the research team on the conduct of the research.
  7. Publish in leading academic journals.
  8. Present your results at major academic conferences in the field and contribute to the work of the IISC, including developing and submitting grant proposals.

Your Profile 

  1. A Ph.D. degree in Constitutional Law; additional degree in Middle Eastern Studies or European Studies, Comparative Political Theory, Political Science, or Political Philosophy is an advantage.
  2. Knowledge of the constitutional systems in Europe and/or MENA region.
  3. Familiarity with the theories of discursive democracy and constitutionalism, constitutional identity, and debates on interaction between local values (religion, secularism), constitution, and human rights.
  4. Expertise on identity theory is an advantage.
  5. A solid track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  6. A team player with a high degree of autonomy.
  7. Proficiency in English; knowledge of Arabic is a plus.
  8. Willingness to reside in Prague throughout the contract.
  9. While not required, knowledge of Czech or a willingness to learn it would be considered an advantage.
