Background
The Department of Management, part of the triple accredited Birmingham Business School at the University of Birmingham, is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor (Education focused) in OB/HRM. This role forms part of a wider investment into the School’s academic excellence and commitment to setting new global standards in responsible business, one future leader at a time. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join us and make significant contributions to the education excellence of our university.
The Department of Management plays a significant role in a research-intensive Business School by carrying out world-leading research translated into innovative, cutting-edge teaching in relevant subject areas that is original, significant and rigorous. Our intention is to be recognised internationally for research and teaching that is of the highest quality and delivers theoretical and empirical insights that are agenda-setting and have a major impact on the economy, policy and society, not least through our students.
The Department of Management has a collegial culture, with over 90 faculty organised across four subject groups: Business, Economics and Policy; Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and Innovation; Organisation, Work and Employment; and Procurement and Operations Management. Research networks flourish within and across subject Groups, with research centres situated in the Department, across the School and connected to the University’s Institutes, for example, Interdisciplinary Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. The Department has a strong and supportive research culture, with regular seminars, reading groups and a healthy PhD programme. Early Career faculty are particularly supported with developing teaching and research.
The post holder will become a member of the Organisation, Work and Employment (OWE) subject group within the Department of Management. The Group contains well-established research strengths in the broad disciplinary areas of organisation studies, human resource management, employment relations, and political economy. Expertise areas include contemporary issues for the future of work (such as flexible working, the gig economy, decent work/quality of work and pay), employment regulation, comparative political economy, industrial strategy, regional policy and labour markets, responsible business, employment relations, equality, diversity, inclusion and workplace well-being, human resource management, knowledge, skills and human capital, and trust at work. The Group teaches organisational behaviour, organisation studies, human resource management, and employment relations across undergraduate and postgraduate, and professional training programmes.
