About the role
As a Principal Analyst, you will lead high-impact activities with autonomy, engaging directly with senior stakeholders to:
- Understand and align business and data requirements
- Provide insights into complex challenges across multiple domains
- Challenge assumptions and drive data-led innovation
Working closely with analysts, developers, and stakeholders, you will improve data quality and facilitate statutory reporting using a range of techniques and tools.
Key responsibilities
- Deliver insights by extracting, transforming, and combining data using Power BI, SQL, Power Automate, and other tools
- Lead the creation and maintenance of data assets to improve data quality, supporting HESA Data Futures and other statutory returns
- Work with IT, SED, and Faculties to understand user needs, providing training to enhance data quality
- Collaborate with External Reporting leads to identify new requirements, process enhancements, and emerging data issues
- Communicate critical analysis and insights, challenging conventional thinking
- Develop technical expertise in new and existing tools, providing guidance on best practices
- Stay informed on OfS policy changes and sector developments, engaging with external networks
- Support the Analytics team in fostering a positive data culture, delivering training, and promoting data-informed decision-making
This is a full-time permanent position. Part-time requests will be considered.
About you
To be successful, you should have:
Essential criteria
- Advanced proficiency in one or more analytics tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Alteryx, SQL, R, Python, Power Automate, Excel, VBA)
- Strong analytical skills, with expertise in deriving insights from data through various techniques
- Ability to present data effectively, creating user-friendly, contextual outputs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of presenting complex analysis to diverse audiences
- Experience engaging with senior stakeholders to influence data-driven decisions
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects with attention to detail and accuracy
- A curious, proactive mindset with a commitment to lifelong learning
- Commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of statutory or regulatory reporting, particularly HESA Data Futures or student-based statutory returns
- Experience using and analysing data in SITS or another student records system
- Experience developing and delivering training to diverse audiences
