The Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Classics (Greek and Latin Language Teaching) from 1 September 2025. 

This post offers the opportunity to join a vibrant and distinguished community of Classicists. The successful candidate will have, or be expected to develop, a record of world-class teaching and scholarship commensurate with the international reputation of the Faculty of Classics. Teaching responsibilities include contributing to the development and delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate language courses in ancient Greek and Latin, including ab initio courses. 

The successful applicant will join an existing team of three colleagues whose principal duties are the organisation and delivery of the Faculty's language teaching programme.

The faculty are pleased to introduce the Advance Diploma in Classics. This postgraduate qualification is built around intensive language teaching in ancient Greek and/or Latin and is designed to assist students in acquiring knowledge of those languages before they go on to further research. The first cohort of students for the Advanced Diploma will be admitted for the 2026-7 academic year. The Faculty intends this Diploma to be part of a more general reinvigoration of language teaching for all postgraduate students.

The successful candidate will also be expected to play a part in the administrative duties in the Faculty. Information about the Faculty can be found at www.classics.cam.ac.uk.

Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • PhD in a related area (or clear evidence that completion of such a doctorate is imminent);
  • Evidence of ability to teach ancient Greek and Latin language effectively at all relevant levels;
  • Evidence of an ability to perform management and administrative duties;
  • Evidence of ability to promote the Faculty and its courses, including the new Advanced Diploma, to potential applicants;
  • Willingness to undertake international travel as part of the role;
  • Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the Faculty;
  • Ability to work as part of a team

The undergraduate and postgraduate student body in Classics has become increasingly diverse in recent years and we aim to achieve similar diversity among academic staff. Accordingly, the Faculty particularly welcomes applications from candidates from a Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic background for this vacancy, as people from these backgrounds are currently underrepresented at this level in our Faculty.
