Job Summary

The post holder will be working within the BIA, a unit within the University of Birmingham that provides foundation programmes, presessional programmes and insessional modules and short courses to international students whose first language is not English. The learning technologist will work closely with the Educational Technologist Manager and the BIA presessional project team in developing Canvas courses for teachers and students, supporting both the Foundation Programme and the Insessional Programme. The role will focus on developing online teaching and learning environments within Canvas, transferring teacher-developed materials to an online format, and exploring innovative ways to enhance teaching and learning with technology. The post holder will provide essential input into projects where necessary and undertake additional tasks outlined in the main duties section below

Main Responsibilities

  • Use knowledge, skills, and experience to support the pedagogic transformation across the three programme areas.
  • Work closely with teachers, administration, students, and management, providing pedagogic advice, guidance, encouragement, and support to deliver pedagogically transformed programmes.
  • Undertake the creation of digital learning environments using the University’s learning management system, Canvas.
  • Evaluate stakeholders’ experience of the digital content design and creation processes and review final content against the intentions identified in the storyboard/scripts/raw material.
  • Assist in the appraisal from the student perspective, including reviewing engagement data and feedback gathered from students during delivery.
  • Redevelop new web pages using the Contensis software.
  • Guide and support summer staff in using various platforms where and when needed.
  • Support and collaborate with schools and the Dubai Campus where necessary

Person Specification

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent level qualifications) - where no equivalent qualification is held, relevant work experience evidencing progression and development together with evidence of the transferable skills and ability to work at this level will normally be required
  • Significant practical experience in a similar role
  • A levels or an equivalent level 3 qualification, such as a Level 3 NVQ, or level 3 national diploma.
  • GCSEs to a minimum of grade C/4 in English and Mathematics (or equivalent qualifications)
