Birmingham City University – Human Resources

Locations: Human Resources (On-site)

Birmingham City University is expanding its EDI Unit to introduce a Project Implementation Lead, who will spearhead initiatives aimed at tackling inequality and creating positive outcomes for both students and staff.

In this role, you will drive key EDI priorities; closing the degree awarding gaps, reducing gender and ethnicity pay gaps, and fostering inclusive cultures where everyone feels valued, respected, and safe. You will focus on planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating initiatives that improve organisational performance across various metrics.

Our mission is to be the most inclusive higher education employer, reflecting the diverse nature of our city. If you're passionate about making a meaningful impact and fostering a thriving, inclusive environment, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead initiatives that address equality and diversity challenges across the University.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and external partners to advance EDI priorities.
  • Drive the planning, development, and evaluation of projects to improve organisational performance.
  • Provide proactive support and expert advice on race equality to senior leaders.
  • Build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including private/public organisations, community groups, and individuals from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Essential Requirements

The requirements of the role are detailed in the person specification section of the job description, but some key requirements are:

  • Strong commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a solid understanding of how these principles apply to this role.
  • In-depth knowledge of the challenges facing the higher education sector, particularly in relation to race equality.
  • Proven experience providing race equality support and advice to senior leaders.
  • Demonstrated expertise in implementing EDI initiatives within large organisations.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to execute projects to completion without direct management oversight.
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, capable of engaging diverse individuals across various contexts, both remotely and in-person.
  • Self-awareness and an understanding of your own cultural norms, values, and unconscious biases, as well as their impact on wider intersectional identities.

What’s in it for you?

  • Generous annual leave entitlement of 40 days (including bank holidays and closure periods) per annum pro rata.
  • An attractive direct contribution pension scheme, or the option to retain LGPS for existing and previous members.
  • Wellbeing advice and support through our Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Cycle to Work Scheme.
