We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant – Genomics to join Professor Richard White’s research group with responsibility for the provision of research support for genomic analysis and computational biology approaches in our cancer models. You will provide advice and guidance to research students where appropriate.
You will be responsible for managing your own research and administrative activities within the guidelines set by senior colleagues. Your role will involve analysing and interpreting large-scale datasets from various sources, including publicly available data and those generated within our lab. You will contribute to the development of new research ideas suitable for D.Phil. level students and determine the most appropriate methodologies to test hypotheses, identifying suitable alternatives if technical challenges arise. Additionally, you will select, follow, and adapt experimental protocols after training and utilize specialist scientific equipment, particularly Zeiss microscopes, in a laboratory environment. As part of your responsibilities, you will represent the research group at external meetings and seminars, either independently or alongside colleagues. You will also engage in discussions and collaborate with partner institutions and research groups, sharing research findings to support the advancement of scientific knowledge.
It is essential that you have an undergraduate degree in genomics and/or bioinformatics, along with experience in analytic techniques such as single-cell RNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq, cell-cell communication analysis, trajectory analysis, sci-Plex, and sci-rocket analysis. Additionally, you will have experience in experimental techniques, including zebrafish husbandry, zebrafish microinjections, and imaging of transgenic zebrafish using fluorescent and brightfield microscopy. The ability to manage your own research and administrative activities, demonstrated through lab notebooks and presentations, is also essential. Excellent communication skills are essential, including the ability to write text suitable for publication, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings. Furthermore, you will have experience in following and adapting protocols as well as selecting appropriate experimental methodologies. Experience of contributing to reports and articles for publication, and experience of working in a research team and contributing ideas for new research projects are highly desirable.
