We are looking to appoint a new Bursar to lead a strong team recruited and developed by the current Bursar who is retiring from the role in Autumn 2025.

As Bursar you will be tasked with overseeing the successful and efficient day-to-day running of our financial and operational services as well as motivating and developing all professional services staff. This is a strategic senior leadership role with specific responsibility for finance, estates, HR, IT, legal matters, portering, catering, conferences and accommodation.

Skills and Experience

Candidates should bring:

  • A successful track record of senior leadership and management, including proven expertise as a very good administrator, with the strategic vision and initiatives to promote the objectives of the College.
  • A strong commitment to building a positive culture based on the college’s core values of innovation, impact and inclusion.
  • The ability to work in a collegiate institution whose primary purpose is the advancement of education, learning and research.
  • Experience of developing strategies designed to anticipate and respond proactively to a rapidly changing environment.
  • The ability to balance limited resources with multiple demands and expectations.
  • Astute business and commercial acumen, with the ability to direct the input of external advisors and agents to the best interests of the College.
  • The ability to manage change and lead projects effectively, and to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness in approaching the role.
  • The ability to manage a highly varied workload, with the ability to cope under pressure, to manage a high degree of complexity, and to exercise a mature and balanced judgement in relation to priorities.
  • A degree or equivalent qualification.

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills, including working co-operatively with others, negotiating and influencing skills and the ability to lead and manage teams.
  • An interest in higher education and an affinity with the ethos of an academic community.
  • An appreciation of the differing priorities and interests of the various constituents of College life.

  • A high degree of personal integrity with the ability to stand apart and exercise independent judgement.

  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to present complex material clearly to different audiences, both internal and external to the College.
  • A willingness to “roll their sleeves up” when required and to be engaged actively in all aspects of College life.
  • A proactive style and entrepreneurial capacity, with the ability to identify opportunities and take initiative.
  • Presence, sensitivity, inclusiveness, patience and persuasiveness.
