The Opportunity:

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fixed-term post as Teaching Fellow in Icelandic to join the Department of European Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh. 

The Teaching Fellow, in Icelandic will act as Course Organiser and sole tutor for the courses Modern Icelandic Language 1a, and Modern Icelandic Language 1b. In addition, to administering the courses and delivering tutorials, the Teaching Fellow will coordinate conversation classes and cultural activities and act as point of contact for general enquiries regarding Icelandic provision within the University.

This is a part-time fixed term post comprising 40 contact hours in Semester 1 and 44 in Semester 2, with all duties combined amounting to approximately 275 hours in each of the academic years starting 2025-26. Teaching will take place on campus.

Please note that while the School of Literatures, Languages & Cultures operates with a hybrid working model, all teaching is delivered in person and on campus.

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • Hold a university degree corresponding to a MA (Hons), preferably in Icelandic Studies, have Icelandic as their mother-tongue or near-native proficiency in Icelandic. 
  • Experience and skills in teaching modern Icelandic language at a university level.
  • Commitment to high-quality teaching, learning and assessment with demonstrable success in delivering effective university teaching in modern Icelandic language.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in modern Icelandic and English, and clear communication with students in correspondence and feedback.
  • Evidence of self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, managing and prioritising within a varied workload.
  • Competency in using IT effectively for teaching and learning, as appropriate to the role.
