Role Description

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science is seeking to appoint an Associate Lecturer in Chinese Translation and Interpreting from August 1 2025 to contribute to our recently-launched postgraduate programmes in interpreting, translation and applied technologies. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in contributing to the delivery and success of our growing suite of translation and interpreting programmes in a dynamic department that excels in both research and teaching.

This post is offered on a part-time basis, 0.5 FTE, on a fixed term (2 years) at Grade 6.

Department

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York offers a wide range of courses in languages and linguistics, joint degrees with other disciplines and, more recently, postgraduate training in translation and interpreting. Our department also delivers language electives to students from across the university, and language classes open to students, staff and the general public. We are 1st in the UK for the quality of our research according to the Times Higher Education’s ranking of the latest REF results (2021), and both our teaching and research have been highly rated for a number of years. We belong to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, which is ranked 54th in the world by subject in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Role

  • To lecture, and to lead seminars, tutorials and other forms of undergraduate and postgraduate translation and interpreting teaching involving Chinese (Mandarin) and English
  • To develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and materials which create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students, and which display an understanding of both the academic discipline and the language services industry
  • To carry out on-going curriculum review, including module content and materials, and to contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies
  • To contribute to the development of translation and interpreting as a subject area within the department and the university
  • To undertake effectively a range of administrative responsibilities
  • To support recruitment activities for our translation and interpreting programmes
  • To oversee assessments for our Chinese provision

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Postgraduate degree in translation and/or interpreting
  • Near-native proficiency in both Chinese (Mandarin) and English
  • Knowledge in translation and interpreting pedagogy sufficient to design and deliver teaching activities, and to provide learning support
  • Knowledge of translation and interpreting as a discipline
  • Proven ability to design and deliver teaching and assessment in a way that meets the needs of a specific cohort
  • Professional experience in translation and interpreting between Chinese and English
  • Excellent knowledge of the language services industry, in particular for the Chinese-English language combination
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to engage with diverse audiences
