Lecturer/Teacher in Optical Science/ Dispensing Optician (part-time)

Contract: 0.4 FTE (2 days which could be flexi contract across week)

Accountable to: Director of Science and Health

Core Purpose: You will have responsibility for planning and teaching a variety of modules on the on AUEA’s new Healthcare qualifications in Optical Care (T Level), to ensure students on the programme develop authentic theoretical knowledge and practical optometry skills. The T Level qualification is a 2 – year full time Level 3 qualification with 20% on industry placement.

About You:

You will have appropriate experience and qualifications reflecting a strong background in Optometry/Optical Science specifically with experience as or teaching a role of Dispensing Optician. You may also have experience of delivering training in the work place or lecturing of optometry / optical care qualifications.

You must have the ability to communicate with students and to motivate and support them in their studies.

You will need to act as course tutor and support the day-to-day management of the Healthcare T Level programme as well as being able to teach up to level 3 across a range of courses. However, you do not need to be a qualified teacher as could be offered as part of your training.

When appropriate, you will be expected to liaise with employers and help to embed work experience into your curriculum.

Key Responsibilities:

Responsibility for raising the standards of all the students you teach in the subject of T Level Healthcare (Optical Care):

  • To be responsible for the teaching of relevant teaching material within T Level Healthcare (Optical care).
  • To contribute to the ongoing development of appropriate teaching materials, resources and schemes of learning.
  • To be responsible for managing the resources in the teaching rooms to which you are deployed.
  • To be a tutor, when assigned, and to be responsible for carrying out the duties as set down in the generic tutor job description.
  • To be responsible for carrying out a fair share of supervisory duties and cover for absent colleagues.
  • To be responsible for following Science Curriculum Area and AUEA policy on matters such as lesson preparation, schemes of work, marking, record keeping and homework and quality assurance. 
  • To be responsible for organising a disciplined working environment in which students can achieve their maximum potential. 
  • To support the marketing and promotion of the provision to employers and stakeholders.
  • To participate in appropriate meetings as necessary within the Academy.

Responsibility for educational progress for all your students in the subject of T Level Healthcare (Optical Care):

  • To be responsible for monitoring students progress in your science groups by academic tracking and data analysis. 
  • To be responsible for reporting to and liaising with T Level Leader, Director of Science, teaching/support staff, Aston University staff and students, employer partners, and parents/carers. 
  • To ensure a culture and ethos of challenge and support in your teaching where all students can achieve success and become engaged in their own learning.
  • To demonstrate and articulate high standards in Optical Science.

Responsibility to engage with employers to support high quality learning outcomes: 

  • Participating in monitoring visits for students on work placement, recording the “real world” learning taking place using designated tracking and monitoring systems, providing feedback for all stakeholders. 
  • Engaging and collaborating with employers in the planning and design of the T level curriculum/pathway including the employer project. 
  • Preparing learners for their work placement, working with the Director of Placements and Partnerships and industry placement team to ensure that learners are “work ready” and in a position to learn in a positive and safe way. 
  • Working with employers to set expectations regarding the knowledge, skills and behaviours to be gained/developed by learners whilst in placement and to ensure a positive experience from induction to completion.
  • Supporting employers in setting and contributing to the employer project.

Additional responsibilities:

  • To attend appropriate INSET to enhance subject knowledge, awareness of curriculum developments, classroom management skills etc, and whenever appropriate, share new knowledge and experiences with colleagues. 
  • To take an active part in enrichment and extra curricular activities, including open days and recruitment events.
