Faculty of Medical Sciences
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must possess at minimum:
- A Doctor of Optometry (OD) which should be a professional doctorate emphasizing advanced clinical training and comprehensive eye care, accredited by recognized optometric boards
OR
- A Ph.D. in Optometry which should be an advanced research-focused degree from accredited institutions with a focus on clinical and academic contributions in vision science
AND
- Board Certification - Certification by recognized boards
- Fellowship in Optometry
- FAAO Fellowship ideally with at least three (3) years’ of senior-level clinical practice
- Specialized fellowships (Binocular Vision, Contact Lens and Low Vision) ideally with a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the subspecialty
Candidates should also possess:
- Ideally more than two (2) years’ teaching experience in the field of Optometry
AND
- Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Advanced Contact Lens
- Paediatric and Binocular Vision
- Visual Science/Visual Optics
- Public Health/Primary Eye Care
- Low Vision
- Management of Ocular Disease
- Myopia Control
- Ideally at least two (2) years’ experience in more than one specialty area
- Proficiency in sub-speciality training
Candidates with the following would have an advantage:
- Ideally at least one (1) year of clinical experience post-specialist qualification in Optometry, ensuring advanced clinical competency and practical application of specialized skills in eye care
- Strong record of conference presentations, both locally and internationally
- Proven track record of research and publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals
- Experience in the guidance and supervision of student research
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing the field of Optometry
The following would be considered assets:
- Residency training with a key focus on Contact Lens, Binocular Vision, Ocular Pathology, and Low Vision
- Certificate in Medical Education to enhance teaching and mentorship capabilities
- Certificate in university teaching and learning
- Possessing an additional postgraduate degree in a related field to further deepen expertise and knowledge in optometric practice
- Evidence of prior success in attracting external research and development funding
- Knowledge of healthcare financing, resource allocation and cost control
- Evidence of programme or project design, development and implementation
