We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Senior Technical Specialist (Polymer characterisation, Processing and Synthesis) to join our dynamic technical operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for FSE and the wider University. With a commitment to customer service excellence and a passion for science and engineering, the Senior Technical Specialist (Polymer characterisation, Processing and Synthesis) will provide an agile technical support service to staff and students to support teaching, research and professional services. FSE’s research and teaching quality is recognised globally; this is an exciting opportunity to join us in Manchester and contribute to the provision of a sector leading technical service.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering Polymer characterisation, Processing and Synthesis Technical Platform builds upon the innovative, creative, practical, and research capabilities of our enterprising technical staff. The platform aims to accelerate interdisciplinary research and teaching by recognizing the intrinsic synergies in the experimental workflows of Natural Science and Engineering and through supporting the Royce Chemical Materials Discovery theme.

The Senior Technical Specialist will be primarily responsible for developing and leading the provision of polymer characterisation, processing and synthesis science, coordinating relevant polymer and plastics techniques and measurements within the platform:

  • Informing, developing, and continuously reviewing the performance of polymer science, through polymer synthesis, chromatography, characterisation, testing, and processing.
  • Applying expertise in areas of polymer characterisation, optical measurements, or physical characterisation and coordinating activity across the faculty but specifically within the Henry Royce Hub to provide a world-class service to engage and develop new methods and methodologies in line with advances in technology and research needs.
  • Managing and developing a team of multi-skilled technical and experimental staff from within the Polymer characterisation, Processing and Synthesis Platform.
  • Proactively engaging with all stakeholders internal and external, in collaboration with the Henry Royce Research and Facility Manager, to the university by building positive relationships to help drive successful outcomes.
  • Providing training, advice, and support to eligible facility users working on relevant projects, ensuring the effective use of a wide range of scientific equipment and the interpretation of acquired data in support of polymer science.
