The Department of Earth and Environmental Science seeks to recruit an Ecologist to develop our vision for a Nature Based Solutions hub addressing global environmental challenges.

The position will support and convene the existing critical mass of researchers at UoM with a commitment to understanding and mitigating the impacts of environmental change. Key research areas include ecological and evolutionary responses to climate change, particularly in the context of sustainable land use, biodiversity conservation and climate mitigation; ecosystem resistance and resilience to climate change; and the role of biotic interactions in biogeochemical cycles.

This position will strengthen cross-university links and exploit the potential for joint funding applications (e.g. cross-council NERC-BBSRC remit calls) for example with the Evolution, Infection and Genomics (EIGen) Division in the School of Biology, the Environmental Genomics research in the Manchester Institute for Biotechnology (MIB), or the School of Environment, Education and Development (SEED). The appointee will enhance our research-led teaching in ecology and environmental biology, which is central to our vision for helping create the next generation of leaders to deliver environmental solutions. This position will sit within the Ecology and Evolution Group, which has twelve academic members of staff. The group has access to a wide range of facilities for ecological research, including the Soil and Ecosystem Ecology Laboratory, world leading facilities in the department’s Williamson Research Centre and state of the art glasshouse facilities for plant and soils science research. Some members of the group work in The Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, which was founded to facilitate cross-disciplinary research with applications in human health, the energy economy, food security and the environment.

The groups sits within the Department of Earth and Environmental Science, which is one of the United Kingdom's leading Earth and Environmental Science departments with excellence in both research and teaching. The Department has over 70 academic staff. Environmental research groups in addition to Ecology and Evolution include Atmospheric Science, Molecular Environmental Science, and Ancient Life. The Department is at the forefront of tackling some of the world's most pressing problems, boasting strong collaborative links with industry and public services.

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for promoting good practice in relation to gender; including flexible working arrangements, family-friendly policies, and support to allow staff achieve a good work-life balance. The School (as it was in 2016) received a Silver Athena SWAN Award for its commitment to diversity in the workplace, and the School of Natural Sciences to which the Department now belongs was also recently awarded Athena SWAN Silver. This is part of a wider vision for equality, diversity and inclusion in the university. We welcome applications from all sections of the community especially those historically underrepresented in academia and appointment will be made on merit.
