About us

The School of Geography and Ocean Science (SGOS) is known as "the cradle of geography" in China, with a rich history and significant contributions to the establishment of the field in the country. SGOS was originally founded as the Department of Geoscience in 1921 by Professor Kezhen Zhu. Guided by theories in Earth System Science and human-land relationship, SGOS’s research tackles the basic questions in geography and ocean science, as well as the grand challenges in China’s development. SGOS innovates in Earth System Science, processes of geographical elements and global change, geomorphology, carbon cycle and carbon neutrality, land-sea interactions, land resources protection and utilization, maritime rights and security, territorial planning and urban-rural integrated development, tourism geography and national park management, remote sensing, and geographic information science. Meanwhile, SGOS is home to several high-level teaching and research platforms, including The Collaborative Innovation Center of South China Sea Studies, National 111 Talent Recruitment Base, Frontiers Science Center for Critical Earth Material Cycling, National Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Center for Earth System Science, Key Laboratory of Coast & Island Development of the Ministry of Education, Field Observation and Research Station of Huangshan National Park Ecosystem, Key Laboratory of Land Surface Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Key Laboratory of Carbon Neutrality and Territorial Space Optimization, and Key Laboratory of Geographic Information Technology of Jiangsu Province.

Job Description

We currently have openings for tenure-track positions in four disciplines, including Physical Geography, Human Geography, Geographic Information Science and Marine Science. These positions are offered at the rank of tenure-track assistant professor. Highly qualified applicants may apply for higher rank positions, including tenure-track associate professor and tenured positions, pending negotiations with SGOS and Nanjing University.

Requirements

  1. Applicants are required to comply with the laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China. Applicants should demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching and research at Nanjing University.   
  2. Applicants should possess good morals and academic ethics, be diligent, and have no criminal record or history of violating teachers' morals or academic ethics.   
  3. Applicants should have excellent academic background, including a doctoral degree in a related field, as well as work and study experiences in leading teaching and research institutions. Applicants should be familiar with the latest research developments in their respective fields. In principle, applicants for tenure-track assistant professor should ideally have a minimum of two years of research experience after obtaining their PhD. The same time requirement for higher rank position applicants is at ideally a minimum four years.  
  4. Applicants should possess excellent teaching skills, including the ability to teach advanced courses in the applicant’s discipline. Applicants should demonstrate effective teaching methods and strong communication skills. 
  5. Applicants should have a record of outstanding research achievements and demonstrate potential for further advancement. They should have made notable and original contributions to their area of research. In addition, applicants should demonstrate a clear vision of their future research plans.   

Remuneration

270000-320000 RMB annually

  1. An annual salary (to be worked out individually)  
  2. A start-up fund for research   
  3. Qualification to supervise graduate students  
  4. The university provides short-term lodging and housing subsidies. Applicants recruited can purchase commercial housing offered by the university at a special discount  
  5. The university provides assistance with children's schooling at primary and secondary school levels

  3. Selected achievements, such as papers, research projects, awards, and patents (no more than five items in total).

  5. Three letters of recommendation, and correspondence details of the  referees.  
  6. Evidence of teaching experience, such as class materials, student work,  and course evaluations.
