Heart valve (HV) disease is a major cause of cardiac malfunction, with high mortality if left untreated. Over 200,000 patients annually receive bioprosthetic HV replacements, which offer superior haemodynamic performance and enable transcatheter replacements. However, designing these flexible structures is challenging. Understanding HV loading and mechanical strains is crucial to ensure device longevity (37 million cardiac cycles per year!) and optimal cardiovascular function.

This project aims to integrate advanced image-based measurement techniques with computational models for a comprehensive analysis of HV fluid-structure interaction. The PhD student will use digital image correlation (DIC) to capture full-field strain and particle image velocimetry (PIV) to visualize flow dynamics in a pulsatile flow mock loop simulating cardiovascular conditions. The multi-camera DIC setup will capture valve deformation during opening and closing, while the 4D PIV system will track dynamic flow structures, providing a complete performance assessment.

The BEST Lab, led by Dr. Arora and Dr. van Loon, has over 15 years of expertise in experimental mechanics, including DIC, PIV, and digital volume correlation (DVC). However, testing in immersed conditions presents challenges such as optical distortions and pattern durability, which will require innovative solutions from the PhD student. Addressing these challenges will support future industrial applications and contribute to device design improvements.

The project will involve close collaboration with Boston Scientific Ltd., ensuring regular feedback and practical applications. The student will gain hands-on experience in advanced mechanical testing, data analysis, and computational modeling, preparing them for future careers in academia or industry.

The BEST Lab combines computational and experimental expertise to develop innovative technologies and translational research solutions. It provides a collaborative space for interdisciplinary researchers, supporting projects from concept to testing using advanced computational mechanics, machine learning, and data analytics. With over 20 PGR students and Research Staff, the Lab delivers high-quality research outputs and works closely with industry partners.

The PhD student will collaborate with Boston Scientific Ltd., with regular reporting and engagement throughout the project. This partnership, along with input from various research groups, will provide the student with diverse skills and networking opportunities. By the end of the project, the candidate will have gained valuable experience for careers in academia or industry, supported by the Lab’s broad expertise. 

Funding Details

Scholarship open to UK and International fee eligible students

This scholarship covers the full cost of tuition fees and an annual stipend at UKRI rate (currently £19,237 for 2024/25).

Additional research expenses of up to £1,000 per year will also be available.
