The role/Te mahi

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) (DVC R&I) is responsible for developing and implementing policies and strategic directions for both research (including postgraduate research) and innovation (including enterprise and commercialisation). This role will drive Otago's commitment to delivering high-quality, impactful research that informs our educational offerings, supports enrolment growth, and fosters interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations to transform the world we live in.

The DVC R&I plays a key role in achieving the University's Vision 2040 and Pae Tata 2030 goals, as well as supporting the strategic frameworks that underpin research excellence. This position will enhance the university's performance and reputation by promoting increased research quality, generating income through grants and partnerships, and cultivating strong research relationships with academic and commercial partners.

As a vital member of the Senior Leadership Team, the DVC R&I will collaborate closely with the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Pro-Vice-Chancellors, and the Research Division, while upholding the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The successful candidate will also lead the Research & Innovation Office in implementing the Research and Innovation Domain, alongside the Research Impact Framework.

This position offers an exciting and unique opportunity to lead the University's new strategic direction.

Candidates will ideally have the following:

  • High international and national standing in research
  • A current research programme at a high international standard demonstrated by work on ongoing research projects, plans for new projects and submission of manuscripts for publication
  • Commitment to the University's goal of being Te Tiriti led, and a strong understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its place in research and innovation
  • Demonstrated leadership ability and experience in a university (in a role such as Head of Department)
  • A strong understanding of the research funding environment in New Zealand and elsewhere, and emerging trends in research and innovation including trans/inter disciplinary research.
  • A strong understanding of research commercialisation and the broader innovation ecosystem
  • Understanding of the research and innovation needs of the business community, and how university research can contribute to these
