The role

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Scientific Project Support Teaching Technologist to assist with lab-based projects undertaken by undergraduate, taught postgraduate and outreach students in the School of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. Working closely with academic staff, the role involves providing creative and innovative solutions to enhance student learning through hands-on experimental techniques.

You will train students and staff in experimental techniques required to fulfil the project brief as determined by the Lead Academic in areas such as cancer biology, virology, bacteriology, stem cell biology and immunology; as well as supporting student data analysis and troubleshooting of experimental techniques.

You will also contribute to the development and delivery of teaching activities and provide specialist technique and equipment-based knowledge for projects in the above areas.

The role will be primarily responsible for preparation of all biological materials to support student projects (e.g. cultured cell lines, antibodies and bacterial samples).

You will also be responsible for the lab management of the primary project space, in terms of safety documentation, consumables and equipment maintenance.

What will you be doing?

  • You will apply your professional expertise in the design of stimulating learning solutions for lab-based projects. 
  • You’ll work with key academic stakeholders to provide specialist solutions in the planning, design and delivery of lab-based projects. 
  • You will deliver laboratory technique-specific teaching to students and develop physical and digital teaching resources.
  • You will operationally manage the primary project lab, working together with other technical team members to ensure the spaces are prepared for sessions.

Having the ability to understand and interpret a range of complex and detailed information will be key. You will be a true team player with a drive to enhance the student experience wherever possible and will enjoy working in a student-facing environment and responding to evolving demands.

Key skills needed include: 

  • Good project planning and management skills. 
  • Proven lab management experience. 
  • Knowledge and experience of a wide range of biomedical science-based techniques. 
  • Knowledge of teaching practices and techniques preferably within a scientific or HE environment. 
  • Good working knowledge of Health and Safety requirements. 
  • Ability to use initiative in excellent design and delivery of training or teaching.  
  • Committed to fostering productive and supportive relationships with all key stakeholders. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. 
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritise competing demands effectively.
