Background

The University of Birmingham's Clinical Immunology Services (CIS) is seeking an experienced Business Development Manager to join our team. This is a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in driving the commercial strategy and business development of a leading immunology service provider.

The CIS offers an extensive range of tests for the immunological evaluation of patients, ensuring the highest quality of service with prompt and accurate results. We are dedicated to training the next generation of academic and clinical scientists and are an ISO 15189 UKAS-accredited provider of immunodiagnostic and blood cancer services. Our work is supported by specialist medical and scientific expertise, and we engage in clinical trials and bespoke research projects.

Main Duties

  • As the Business Development Manager, you will be responsible for driving commercial strategy, business development, and procurement. Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Market Analysis and Strategic Positioning: Conduct market research to identify trends, competitor activities, and emerging opportunities. Contribute to the review and refinement of the CIS Strategic Business Plan.
  • Business Development and Income Generation: Identify and develop opportunities for commercial partnerships, consultancy services, and external funding. Build strong and trusted relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Commercialisation Opportunities: Develop fee-for-service models, intellectual property exploitation, and spin-out ventures.
  • Stakeholder and Industry Engagement: Build relationships with NHS bodies, academic institutions, and industry partners to drive innovation and ensure alignment with institutional goals.
  • Contract and Procurement Management: Oversee procurement processes, negotiate contracts, and manage vendor relationships.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Degree level education or equivalent qualifications with significant relevant hands-on business development experience, ideally within biochemical immunology or clinical diagnostics/medical technology.
  • Proven business development/sales skills and client relationship management experience.
  • Experience in planning and organizing a comprehensive pipeline of opportunities to meet income targets.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience in supporting Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion within the organisation.
