About the Role

The Director of Business Development will lead Queen Mary’s Business Development team, working across the university to supporting academic colleagues in developing productive and strategic relationships with industry, public sector organisations and relevant funders. They will seek to maximise opportunities for utilising Queen Mary’s academic strengths, drive our ambition to scale industrial engagement and enhance societal and economic outcomes.  They will use their networks across the sector and with industry to develop opportunities and ensure Queen Mary is adopting and innovating good practice in collaboration. 

About You

We are looking for someone who will have:

  • Substantial business development experience gained within a HEI or research organisation setting. 
  • A track record of success in securing funding and contract negotiation  
  • Experience of leading, mentoring and motivating business development professionals in the university or wider research sector 
  • Experience of strategic planning, budget management and a high level of numeracy 
  • Demonstrable understanding of research, commercialisation, IP management and wider innovation processes, cultures and environments gained through working in such environments 
  • Networks across the research sector and with industry  

About the Team

The role reports to the Director of Research and Innovation as part of the Research Services Directorate in Queen Mary. The post holder will work collaboratively with key teams across Queen Mary including  Faculties  and Queen Mary Innovation Ltd. The post is primarily based at QMUL Dept W near Whitechapel but requires regular travel to other Queen Mary sites, external meetings and occasionally overseas.
