About us
IOE is UCL Faculty of Education and Society.
Founded in 1902, IOE has been shaping policy and helping government, organisations and individuals navigate a changing society for the last 120 years. We embrace collaboration and excellence to create a future that is inclusive and just, and have been ranked number one for education every year since 2014 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
About the role
The Mathematics Education team within CPA contributes to a well-established and popular Master’s course in Mathematics Education, to a range of Initial Teacher Education routes, including Secondary PGCE and School Direct and the Secondary Mathematics Teacher Degree Apprenticeship (TDA). The Department also has a strong group of doctoral students.
We are looking to appoint a Lecturer (Grade 8; £52,762 to £62,035 per annum, inclusive of £4,613 per annum London Allowance). The successful candidate will become part of the mathematics education team, commencing in September 2025 (or as soon as possible thereafter). You are expected to engage in relevant teaching and supervision of student teachers, including teaching and supervision of master’s level academic assignments. You will be encouraged to collaborate and develop a productive connection across relevant areas of mathematics within the Department and with other Departments of the Institute. In addition, you will be at the forefront of national developments in learning and teaching methodologies in the classroom and contribute to research projects in mathematics education.
We will consider appointing a suitably experienced candidate as Associate Professor (Grade 9, Salary: £67,341 - £73,142, inclusive of £4,613 per annum London Allowance). In addition to the above, the post requires that you can provide leadership within the department, including mentoring and line management.
Employment is dependent on successful DBS check.
About you
Both roles require that you have a first degree or equivalent experience in an area relevant to mathematics education, a master’s degree in mathematics education or a related field, and higher degree in mathematics education or related field (either complete or nearing completion). You have a Qualified Teacher Status or the equivalent, and successful teaching experience relevant to school mathematics teaching in England. You will have experience of working effectively with student teachers, in-service teachers and/or school colleagues to support their professional development, alongside a working knowledge of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes relevant to England. In addition, you will have a good knowledge of the academic literature in mathematics education required for the ITE, MA and TDA programmes in higher education settings and have the potential to design and deliver complex projects, with both a research and an education focus.
Your application form should address all the person specification points and should clearly demonstrate how your skills and experience meet each of the criteria.
If you would like your application to be considered for Associate Professor (Grade 9) post, please refer to the required criteria for the post in the Person Specification section of the Candidate Information Pack.
