Birmingham City University are looking to appoint a high calibre graduate (graduated within the last five years) as an AI Engineer (KTP Associate).

This role presents an exciting opportunity to work in collaboration with leading academics at Birmingham City University, to apply knowledge and technical innovation, delivered on site at the company.  The AI Engineer (KTP Associate) should have a minimum 2.1 University qualification in a relevant subject and graduated within the last five years.

This Knowledge Transfer programme (KTP), co-funded by a grant from Innovate UK and Jhoots Pharmacy Limited. Personal Training & Development Budget:

The AI Engineer (KTP Associate) will have a wider range of benefits including a personal development budget of £5,000 to upskill during the project. 

The successful candidate will be employed by Birmingham City University, and seconded to work full-time onsite at Jhoots Pharmacy Limited to deliver the 30-month KTP project in partnership with Birmingham City University and Jhoots Pharmacy Limited.

To connect AI with current NHS app data platform and FDA (Federated Data Platform) to enhance the patient experience. The NHS FDA platform aims to enhance the patient care and increase efficiency. It securely connects data, breaks down information silos, and provides insights to assist in decision-making, reduce costs, and improve patient outcomes.

Jhoots, alongside dispensing prescriptions and retailing over-the-counter medicines, offers a full range of Essential, Advanced and Enhanced NHS services including, blood pressure monitoring, emergency Hormonal Contraception, medicines advice for residential and nursing homes, and medicine use reviews

The successful candidate will have full access to Birmingham City University’s resources such as offices, labs, and library to complete the KTP project (a project workplan written with KPIs and outcome deliverables has been written).

The AI Engineer (KTP Associate) will be supervised and mentored by both a lead academic and academic supervisor academics from BCU’s College of Computing within the Faculty of CEBE as well as a company supervisor located at Jhoots Pharmacy Limited whose aim is to assist the AI Engineer to deliver the knowledge into the Jhoots Pharmacy Limited and successfully deliver the 30-month KTP project on behalf of Jhoots Pharmacy Limited and Birmingham City University.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The AI Engineer KTP Associate will work on:

  • Developing an intelligent traceability system for medicine prescriptions which will connect GP surgeries, hospitals, pharmacies, and patients. 
  • To develop a prototype system that monitors the location and status of a prescription while integrated across different care facilities such as GP surgeries, hospitals, pharmacies.
  • To interact with relevant stakeholders within the healthcare ecosystem.

The AI Engineer KTP Associate must also be adept at applying their knowledge to commercial projects, driving value and making an impact where possible, with an ability to solve problems and create innovative solutions.

The AI Engineer KTP Associate must have the following key attributes to ensure the project’s successful completion.

Skills and Experience:

The AI Engineer KTP Associate will hold a relevant degree. This might be a first degree (equivalent to First Class or 2:1 Honours) in Computer Science, a Master’s degree in a similar discipline is acceptable. 

Essential:

  • First degree (equivalent to First Class or 2:1 Honours) or a Master's degree in a computer science or strongly relevant discipline (nearing completion considered).
  • Proficiency in full-stack development tools and frameworks, such as Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) and debuggers.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) for deploying scalable and secure healthcare solutions.
  • Knowledge of fundamental AI concepts, including experience in the development and application of AI, ML, and NLP (Natural Language Processing) algorithms to deliver software modules.
  • Knowledge of fundamental concepts within cyber security preferably how these are applied within healthcare systems.
  • Competence in designing efficient and reliable software for computing systems.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and documenting work.
  • Enthusiastic, self-motivated and able to take a proactive role that will successfully deliver the work plan in the proposal.
  • The AI Engineer KTP Associate must be a proficient communicator and engage fully with all stakeholders, seminars, workshops, and events to highlight the work of the project.

Desirable:

  • Experience in designing scalable distributed systems for secure and efficient communication between multiple nodes, such as pharmacies, hospitals, and central databases.
  • Knowledge of technologies and protocols used within healthcare systems preferably within the context of the NHS.
  • Flexibility to work with a variety of software platforms and adapt to new technologies.
  • The ability to learn new technologies and paradigms to facilitate development of cutting-edge systems and services.
  • The ability to work well within a team and collaborate with software developers, and other stakeholders.
  • A strong command of technical writing, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner.

On a personal note, the Associate should be enthusiastic, motivated, punctual, conscientious, trustworthy and a good team worker.
