The School of Engineering is seeking an ambitious leader to take on the role of Head of Department for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, starting in summer 2025 or soon thereafter. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of Engineering at the University of Manchester.

As Head of Department, you will play a pivotal role in driving innovation, advancing research, and enhancing teaching quality in a rapidly evolving field. You’ll join a motivated and forward-thinking School Leadership Team, collaborating across the University to ensure our Department is at the forefront of industry trends, technological advancements, and societal challenges. This position offers an exciting platform to lead strategic realignment, guiding our academic programs and research to meet the demands of tomorrow, while fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and delivering excellent student outcomes.

We are looking for an inclusive, open-minded and dynamic leader with a proven track record in academic leadership and a passion for embracing change. If you’re excited about leading a diverse team, influencing the future direction of the Department, and working with internal and external stakeholders to create impactful change, this role is for you. Previous experience as a Head of Department or School (or equivalent) is an advantage but not essential.

Our Context

We operate in a fast-changing environment, where engineering and computer science skills are in high demand, and funding opportunities are shifting in response to global challenges. Our research and teaching are evolving, with increasing emphasis on interdisciplinary programs such as robotics, while our core undergraduate programs remain highly sought after. As Head of Department, you will navigate these exciting changes and help guide the department’s future success.

You will lead one of five Departments within the School of Engineering, working alongside the Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Management, Computer Science, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering departments. As a key member of the School Leadership Team and Extended Faculty Leadership Team, you will contribute to strategic decision-making and ensure the efficient operation of the department.
