The post holder will join a newly established research group led by Dr Michael Lewis at Warwick Medical School. The group is focused on developing an integrated understanding of Trypanosoma cruzi (American trypanosome) infection dynamics, host responses and immune evasion, and how these combine to shape tissue pathogenesis in Chagas disease. Our over-arching goals are to discover how American trypanosomes cause life-long infections, why they progress to chronic diseases of the heart or digestive tract, and to find ways that this can be prevented. More broadly, we are interested in tissue damage and repair processes in chronic inflammatory conditions, enteric neuropathies and cardiomyopathies. 

The role will involve the development of experimental tools to enhance our ability to study host-parasite interactions at fine spatio-temporal scales e.g. transgenic reporter and mutant parasites, single cell and spatial omics, spectral flow cytometry, ex vivo and organoid infection systems. These will be integrated with our existing infection models to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of Chagas disease pathogenesis. There will be scope for the successful candidate to lead on developing lines of research according to their previous experience and future career development goals.

About You  

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Research Fellow or Research Assistant who has a strong interest in infectious disease pathogenesis and an excellent track record commensurate with experience. You should be able to think critically and creatively to solve scientific problems with a rigorous approach to the design and execution of experiments and data analysis. You will bring relevant skills to the role and a show a desire to further develop your depth and breadth of technical expertise. Abilities to work collaboratively and communicate about your science with diverse audiences will be important.

If you are near submission or have recently submitted your PhD but have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made as Research Assistant at the top of level 5 of the University grade structure. Upon receipt of evidence of the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow on the first point of level 6 of the University grade structure.
