About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery of surgical examinations at the RCS England at a time of expanding activity. The role holder will manage the operational planning and delivery activity of the Part B in both the UK and internationally, providing oversight of all surgical examinations from an administrative and budgetary perspective. This requires oversight of examination preparation (in terms of materials and examiner management) and delivery, through the management of Leads specialising in each area. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain and ensure compliance with all examination schedules to ensure timely delivery of each component of the delivery process, prioritising activity appropriately where timing conflicts require this
  • Oversee the allocation of the annual Court of Examiners rota, for both UK and international examinations, ensuring equity of decisions and dealing with all associated correspondence
  • Oversee the management of props and associated materials for clinical examinations, using scenario-specific expertise to ensure the appropriate props and materials are packed and set up for all clinical examinations
  • Provide the operational detail for the production of annual budgets for UK and international examination centres, monitor expenditure against these and, in the case of international centres, produce financial reports for DSEC and Finance department
  • Assume responsibility for all budgeted delivery expenditure, including the accurate allocation of requisite cash payments to all relevant overseas stakeholders and ensuring accountability through accurate record keeping for financial reconciliation
  • Supervise staff including the setting of objectives and the conduct of performance reviews with named staff in accordance with College policies
  • Lead on investigating candidate complaints, appeals and disputes and in the preparation of reports and draft responses.

  • Experience of the organisation and management of assessments
  • Extensive experience of operating examinations overseas.
  • Line management experience.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise.
  • Self-motivated and able to use own initiative.
  • High level interpersonal skills and experience of dealing with senior people.
