Clinical Fellow for the National Audit of Metastatic Breast Cancer

The Royal College of Surgeons of England - National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre / Clinical Effectiveness Unit

Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract

Location: London

We are seeking an enthusiastic clinical fellow to be part of the multidisciplinary team delivering the National Audit of Metastatic Breast Cancer. The audit is carried out in partnership with many stakeholders including the UK Breast Cancer Group and the Association of Breast Surgery and aims to improve the quality of care delivered to women and men with metastatic breast cancer by:

  1. Providing regular and timely evidence to cancer services in England and Wales of where patterns of care and outcomes vary.
  2. Supporting NHS services to identify the reasons for variation in care in order to guide quality improvement initiatives.
  3. Stimulating improvements in treatment pathways and patient outcomes.

The audit is delivered within the National Cancer Audit Collaborating Centre (NATCAN) (www.natcan.org.uk), which is part of the Clinical Effectiveness Unit at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

The successful candidate will support the development and regular activities of the audit, including the design and development of performance indicators. They will undertake data analysis, produce reports on patterns of care and patient outcomes, support the dissemination of findings, as well as produce outputs such as conference presentations and journal articles. The candidate will have a central role in the delivery of the audit, supporting the quality improvement work, and associated communications and networking. We expect the development work / research undertaken by the candidate would form the basis of an MD/PhD thesis.

The candidate should have clinical experience in the management of metastatic breast cancer in a relevant discipline (e.g. oncology) and have passed a Membership / Fellowship exam of a relevant Royal College. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and good organisational abilities are essential, as is evidence of input in audit / quality improvement projects. Involvement in large-scale audit or quality improvement projects and research is an advantage but training in research methods and statistical analysis will be provided.

The post is offered full-time for 2 years; there may be an opportunity to extend it for 3 years. There will be no clinical duties or on-call commitments. The salary will be £49,909 - £61,825 per annum (plus London weighting), depending on qualifications and experience.

Informal enquiries regarding this post should be directed to Prof David Cromwell, Director of the Clinical Effectiveness Unit (dcromwell@rcseng.ac.uk); Professor David Dodwell, Oncologist (david.dodwell@nhs.net), Dr Mark Verrill (mark.verrill@doctors.org.uk) or Prof Kieran Horgan, Breast Cancer Surgeon (kieran.horgan@nhs.net). The Clinical Research Fellow who is working on the associated National Audit of Primary Breast Cancer can be contacted about their experience of working in NATCAN on a national clinical audit. Prof Cromwell can arrange this upon request.
