We are seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher of outstanding calibre to join our research program in the area of fibre optics and photonics. The position is funded by an EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) large-scale collaborative project between the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton and Microsoft Azure Fiber, located in nearby Romsey. The project seeks to research revolutionary-new optical fibres pioneered at the ORC that guide light in air rather than glass. Air guiding increases the speed at which information is transmitted by 50%, which will contribute to the creation of Microsoft Azure’s next generation ultrafast datacentres and optical networks. The project aims to address research as well as practical aspects of distributed characterization of hollow core fibres, including properties such as attenuation, polarization, but also pressure and content of air inside the fibres.
The successful candidate will be based at the University but work in a strong collaborative environment with Microsoft researchers to solve scientifically-interesting, but also “real-world” challenges associated with bringing a new technology from the lab into the real world.
A strong background in the fibre optics, advanced characterization techniques, and optical signal processing is highly desirable, along with an aptitude for developing new experimental techniques and methodologies that relate to this exciting research program.
To be successful with your application, you will need to demonstrate:
The appointment is for a 2-year fixed period, ideally starting in April 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Informal enquires should be directed to Prof Radan Slavik (R.Slavik@soton.ac.uk).
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
At the University of Southampton, we value diversity and equality. The University recognises that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will also be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness
