Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

The School of Medicine at Cardiff University seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Virology or Viral Immunology to join a newly established Translational Virology Unit that sits across the Division of Infection and Immunity, Division of Cancer and Genetics, and the Centre for Trials Research, based at the Heath Park Site, Cardiff.

The successful candidate will develop an independent research program contributing to basic and applied virology research, including better understanding of viral pathogenesis, viral immunology and novel interventions, vaccines (including the development of mRNA based vaccines) and therapeutics to control viral spread, and/or the refinement of viruses for therapeutic purposes. They will be expected to develop cross cutting collaborative links across relevant Cardiff University research themes, developing competitive research proposals and building research capacity to support Virology-related research – a key area of strength highlighted for support through this newly created Unit. They will actively contribute towards the delivery of the aims and objectives of this post.

The successful candidate will have the majority of their time protected for research and to support career development, we anticipate they will contribute to the School through research led teaching – for example, leading student projects for undergraduates, MSc students and professional training year (PTY) students.

The post holder will have a growing national/international academic reputation, an excellent record of high-quality publications, and the enthusiasm and drive to play a key role in enhancing the School’s reputation for impactful research and community engagement. They will have evidence of their ability to successfully compete for competitive research funding, and of their ability to build a research team that aligns with the expectations of the post.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework, clinical medicine at Cardiff had 92% of its research activity ranked as being world-leading or internationally excellent.

The post holder will engage with external academic, professional and Industrial partners to enhance the School’s reach and reputation, and will enhance the School’s creative and inclusive community, which is recognised for its impact on policy, practice and public life.
