Research Associate in Cell Biology - (8102)

Manchester Metropolitan University – Department of Life Sciences

We are looking to appoint a talented, enthusiastic and dedicated research associate (RA) to join the laboratory of Dr. Jon Humphries for 7 months to investigate the interplay between ubiquitin-based protein degradation and cell adhesion signalling. The project will use cell biological and biochemical approaches to investigate cell-extracellular matrix signalling, with a particular focus on the adhesome and ubiquitin signalling, using proteomic approaches in a cancer cell model system. The successful candidate will be expected to work with cell biology and cancer experts within the Department of Life Sciences, and collaborators at The University of Manchester.

This post is based in the Department of Life Sciences, one of the largest Departments in the University, attracting high numbers of students on a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The Department also provides research training programmes for Doctorate and Masters level postgraduate research students. The Department resides within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and benefits from spacious, modern and well-equipped teaching and research facilities. The successful candidate will have access to outstanding, recently refurbished research facilities which offer state-of-the-art imaging, flow cytometry, genomic/proteomic/bioinformatics services, haematology/haemostasis analysers and cell culture suites. This particular post is available on a fixed-term, full-time (1.0 FTE) basis for 7 months and is funded by an Academy of Medical Sciences Springboard Award.

The Role:
The successful candidate will hold, or be nearing completion of, a doctoral level degree in Cell Biology or Biochemistry or a related area. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge, expertise and research experience in cell signalling or cell adhesion, and ideally practical experience in mammalian cell culture, microscopy, western blotting, affinity-enrichment strategies, or bioinformatics / proteomics.

Other duties and responsibilities include:

  • Maintain accurate records of research conducted and carry out analysis of the results obtained using the most appropriate method.
  • Work independently and in conjunction with other investigators and collaborators.
  • Prepare research findings for publication and presentation.
  • Assist with applications for research grant funding.
  • Assist in the supervision of postgraduate students, PhD students and Technicians in the laboratory.
  • Participate in the activities of the research group via meetings and seminars.
  • Be familiar with national, University and Hospital Trust regulations with regards to research governance.

You will work within the Department of Life Sciences, which provides state of the art research facilities located newly refurbished laboratories. The Faculty of Science and Engineering is an exciting and dynamic environment in which to conduct cutting edge research.

Qualification we require:
Hold or expect to obtain shortly a PhD in relevant sciences subjects.

Experience of the following would be advantageous:

  • Experience of mammalian cell culture.
  • Experience in cell signalling or cell adhesion.
  • Experiences in microscopy and western blotting.
  • Experiences in affinity-enrichment strategies, or bioinformatics / proteomics.
