BACKGROUND

The Director of Operations for the Chief Scientist is an integral part of the Science and Innovation (S&I) leadership team and will work closely with the Chief Scientist (CS) to lead the planning and administration of S&I activity at an exciting and important time in the organisation’s evolution. This role will lead planning and administration activity on behalf of the CS, including the coordination, tracking and progress of key activity at the Institute across Science and Innovation, communicating and delegating tasks as appropriate.

CANDIDATE PROFILE

We are looking for an action-orientated individual who can master a diverse range of briefs and juggle them appropriately, as per the needs of the organisation, and can be flexible in their role as the structures around the CS evolve.

DUTIES AND AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

  • Lead on specific deep dive projects in particular priority areas for the Institute (e.g. Grand Challenge area)
  • Represent and/or support the CS in both internal and external meetings
  • Identify and collaboratively to resolve complex issues often where guidance does not exist or where there is a lack of precedent, offering resolution or escalating as appropriate
  • Support the CS in building new and managing existing relationships with external partnerships

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • A master’s degree, or equivalent relevant experience, in a science of technology discipline
  • Experience of working as part of or alongside a senior or executive team
  • Demonstrable ability to build and develop effective working relationships with partner organisations and working with a diverse set of stakeholders
  • Experience of the work of a research, higher education or science organisation

The Alan Turing Institute is based at the British Library, in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter. We expect staff to come to our office at least 4 days per month. Some roles may require more days in the office; the hiring manager will be able to confirm this during the interview.
