Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in AI & Media Innovation

The University of Hong Kong – Journalism and Media Studies Centre

Applications are invited for appointment as Tenure-Track Professor/Associate Professor/Assistant Professor in AI & Media Innovation in the Journalism and Media Studies Centre (Ref.: 531281), to commence on January 1, 2026 or from as soon as possible thereafter, on a three-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal and consideration for tenure before the expiry of a second three-year fixed-term contract. The appointment rank will be determined according to qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Exceptionally outstanding candidates at Professor/Associate Professor level may be considered for direct tenure subject to University approval.

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre

The Journalism and Media Studies Centre (JMSC) of The University of Hong Kong has, since 1999, offers world-class professional journalism and media education at Asia’s premier university. Our faculty consists of both research-oriented academics and award-winning distinguished professionals from the industry. We have created extensive partnerships with leading global and local media organisations. JMSC graduates work in all media and society sectors, as journalists, film makers, publicists, communicators, and administrators. JMSC programmes and curriculum are designed to enhance professional standards and bolster journalistic integrity through its academic programmes, research, professional services and partnerships with major global, regional, and local media outlets. JMSC is a pioneer in the study and application of technology and AI in media. Requirements

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree in Communication/Journalism/Media Studies/Computer Sciences or related fields of study. Applicants should possess a track record of high-quality publications and/or development of innovative media applications; a record of success at obtaining competitive research funding and/or private/public investments in emerging areas of digital media such as the ethical uses of AI (including but not limited to generative AI), machine learning, computational journalism, immersive technologies (e.g. VR or AR), blockchain, human-computer interaction, or use of any disruptive media technologies. Strong candidates should demonstrate expertise in applying digital technologies to media and communication. Experience in designing and leading undergraduate/postgraduate programmes, as well as the demonstrated ability to create real-world impact through their research work will be an advantage.

Duties and Responsibilities

The appointee will play a key role in developing and leading technology-based academic and professional development initiatives, and fostering industrial and academic partnerships. He/She will teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in areas, such as innovation in media and journalism, human computer interaction, AI ethics, AI and society, AI media applications, and digital art practices. The appointee will also provide postgraduate student supervision, conduct research, and undertake administrative duties.

What We Offer

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary. Housing benefits will be provided as applicable.
