Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

Edinburgh Napier’s School of Applied Sciences is recognised for the quality of the educational provision we offer, the employability of our graduates and the international reputation and partnerships we have.

Our modern specialist laboratory facilities and relationships with external partners provide both staff and students with an ideal environment to deliver excellent research and practical based education.

Currently, we have an opportunity for a Research Fellow to join us as part of the SharkScape project, a three-year, multi-institute initiative that aims to advance understanding of the distribution and sensitivities of priority elasmobranch species in Scottish waters.

The Role:

This Research Fellow post is one that will allow you to play a central role in delivering the objectives of the SharkScape project, which adopts a participatory approach to collect data that will help inform conservation and management efforts for elasmobranch species.

You will have the opportunity to use your knowledge and expertise to lead data collation and analysis to assess the current state of knowledge on priority elasmobranch species, which will include compiling and assessing existing data, conducting targeted research to address knowledge gaps, and producing outputs to support conservation management.

You will be in an excellent position to use your expertise in movement ecology (preferably with experience in large marine vertebrates) to contribute to a comprehensive geospatial database of elasmobranch species distribution and associated sensitivities, as well as lead the preparation of high-impact, open-access peer-reviewed publications and project reports.

Furthermore, your excellent interpersonal skills, and proactive and collaborative approach to engaging with stakeholders will allow you to coordinate the delivery of SharkScape’s interconnected work packages across project stages, ensuring alignment with the overarching research objectives.

This is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved with the design and implementation of a field and analytical research program, targeting key gaps in species distribution, biology, and sensitivity to anthropogenic activities, serving as a natural progression from your existing studies of large marine fauna.

What we will need from you:

  • PhD degree in a relevant subject
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting interdisciplinary research in the marine environment, preferably with elasmobranch species or other marine vertebrates
  • Strong quantitative skills, including geospatial data analysis, statistical modelling, and/or ecological modelling
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.
  • A full UK driving license to drive to multiple remote locations only accessible by car.
