Are you passionate about research experience in criminology and criminal justice? The School of Social Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London, aims to recruit an Associate Lecturer to teach on our Criminology modules this Summer term 2025.

As Associate Lecturer, you will have knowledge of critical criminological approaches to teaching Undergraduate students, and would teach on the following modules:

 Crime and Law, 30 hours teaching, on Tuesdays, 6 – 9pm, 10 weeks, April to July 2025

For this module, we are looking for knowledge related to teaching key elements of criminal law to undergraduate students, including knowledge of the application of criminal law to key crimes such as homicide and domestic violence, key issues in determining guilt and innocence and an understanding of criminal defence. 

 Gender, Crime and Criminal Justice, 15 hours teaching on Wednesdays, 6 – 7.30pm, 10 weeks, April to July 2025

For this module, we are looking for knowledge about the key contributions of feminist and queer criminology to understanding the gender gap in offending, gendered experiences of victimisation and criminalisation and critical approaches to gendered harms and key issues in queer criminology such as hate crimes.

 Criminal Justice Process, 30 hours teaching on Wednesdays, 6 – 9pm, 10 weeks, April to July 2025.

For this module are looking for knowledge of the functioning of the criminal justice system, with a particular emphasis on processes of criminalisation and responses to victimisation.

Please clarify which modules you are interested in teaching on in your application.

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties as required. You will have experience teaching, running seminars, and facilitating group discussions.

Further to the person specification, essential requirements for this role are teaching, and research experience in criminology and criminal justice.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract:

Fixed term, three month contract - 28 April to 11 July 2025. Teaching evenings 6-9pm. Please submit a CV for consideration. Closing date: Sunday 2 March 2025. Interview date: Monday 10 March 2025.
