The Institute of Making (IoM)

The IoM is a unique organisation that explores, celebrates, and investigates materials and processes through a wide range of activities. From large-scale public events to ground-breaking academic research projects, our diverse outputs and many audiences are united by a shared passion for materials and making. In Autumn 2023, we opened a second IoM space in Stratford, expanding our facilities with a bespoke space at UCL East, on the Olympic Park

About the role

The post-holder will be the first point of contact for visitors to the Institute of Making Stratford, acting as the welcoming ‘face’ of the Institute, helping with member and public enquiries and ensuring that only authorised members are accessing our workshops and Materials Library.

The post-holder will provide key information about activities taking place in the workshops, events and the Materials Library. They will also troubleshoot any issues that our members may have around their membership, booking activities and using their online account.

The post-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the reception area, which will include keeping the area tidy and welcoming. Additionally, the post-holder will provide administrative assistance. This will mainly be related to our members, such as managing the members’ email, but may also include assisting other team members; supporting the Events team with a public event, helping the Office Manager to organise team away days, or assisting the wider organisation through ordering stationery and booking couriers.

About you

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the following criteria:

  • GCSE English & Math or equivalent
  • Previous experience of public-facing role(s), either in a reception role or in a similar front of house role
  • Good experience dealing with questions from the general public, students or within a membership organisation, and providing excellent service to a wide range of users at all levels of the organisation
  • Excellent communication skills, whether in person, over the phone or on email, with a clear and effective manner
