Join our vibrant and internationally recognised community in Geography and Environment within the School of Social Sciences and Humanities at Loughborough University as a Geography Technician.

Here’s more about the role and what we’re looking for:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Geography Technician who will work as part of a small technical team. You will be responsible for providing technical support to academic staff, researchers, and students in laboratory and field work across a broad range of geographical disciplines including biogeography, climate, geomorphology, geographical mapping systems (GIS), microscopy, river sciences, soil science and sedimentology.

As a key member of the technical team, you will be required to support laboratory and field activities for both research and teaching activities. You will carry out technical or scientific tasks, under general guidance, but planned and organised independently. As you gain more experience and training, you would be expected to undertake more complex aspects of the role along with challenging tasks and responsibilities. There may be opportunities to learn novel techniques and gain knowledge in new areas of expertise. A good working understanding of relevant Health and Safety regulations and practices is also required.

The ability to prioritise your workload effectively, work to tight deadlines, as well as work with attention to detail are essential to the role. The role will involve frequent interaction with students and staff, so you will need excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a variety of people in a variety of situations. You will need to be versatile, enthusiastic, approachable and able to work independently as well as with others in the small, dedicated technical team.

Key Requirements:

  • You’ll have experience of working in a physical sciences laboratory, workshop or other technical facility.
  • You’ll bring your expertise in maintaining a wide range of physical geography/environmental science lab/field equipment.
  • Work to tight deadlines and on multiple projects.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • A hands-on, pro-active approach to work and 'can-do' attitude.
