We are one of the UK’s largest engineering faculties. Join our team, show us how to think even bigger – and we’ll help you explore what you are capable of, and inspire future generations to exceed their potential in our world-renowned university.

The Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics is growing. We’d like you to join us to help us broaden our research themes and expand our teaching activities.

The University of Southampton is a unique place in which to explore what you are capable of. Inspiring thousands of students every year to explore their strengths and forge life-changing discoveries, we open up a wealth of opportunities for the most inquisitive minds.

Join us, and you’ll have the scope to create your own opportunities. For example, one of our colleagues was first appointed as a Lecturer in 2015 while holding a Marie-Curie Fellowship. Since then, she’s secured several research grants to build a research group and mentored students through research-led teaching. With our support, she’s driven her own progress, been promoted to Professor, and taken two periods of maternity leave.

As one of the world’s top 1% of universities, we know what it takes to create an exceptional student experience. Encouraging our students to challenge conventional thinking, we underpin our exceptional academic courses with a dynamic culture of innovation and research. We roll out this ethos to our staff too with a uniquely collaborative team-spirit in which colleagues support one another in their endeavours. This progressive approach plays a vital role in maintaining our reputation for shaping knowledge in a wide variety of areas, including our widely-interdisciplinary research interests across aerodynamics and aeroacoustics, astronautics, additive manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, battery technologies, design and optimisation, materials sciences and mechatronics. We have new laboratories for testing materials and structures across difference scales using state-of-the-art imaging techniques.

We have this role available:

Post 1:  Associate/ Assistant Professor in Autonomous Space Systems

To make the most of this incredible opportunity, you will need to be PhD qualified, or have a relevant professional qualification. Your research track-record will be impressive, and you will be passionate about working in partnership with others. You will demonstrate a real enthusiasm for your discipline with great communication skills that engage students in their learning, be that one-to-one or in group sessions.

In turn, we will help you find the ideal work/life balance, with flexible working hours and onsite childcare facilities. Committed to tackling gender inequality, we are Athena SWAN bronze award recognised. With a generous benefits package that also includes a contributory pension scheme, competitive holiday allowance, subsidised health and fitness facilities, a cycle-to-work scheme and a range of discounts, this is a place where you are sure to excel.
