Senior Research Associate - Climate Scientist

University of Bristol - School of Geographical Sciences

Location: Bristol
Salary: £42,632 to £47,874 Grade J, per annum
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 30th January 2025
Closes: 15th February 2025
Job Ref: ACAD107940

The role

We are really pleased to announce a super-exciting opportunity for a postdoc (Senior Research Associate) to work on an EU-funded project, involving tuning a state-of-the-art CMIP7 model using paleoclimate data, and using the paleo-tuned model to make future climate predictions.

Focus will be on the key paleoclimate intervals of the Last Glacial Maximum, 21,000 years ago, and the early Eocene, 50 million years, thereby leveraging information from the very warmest and very coldest states of the last 65 million years, and stretching the capabilities of climate models to their limits.

The position is part of the EU-funded Past2Future project (Past to Future: towards fully paleo-informed future climate projections). More details of the project are available from Dan Lunt on request (d.j.lunt@bristol.ac.uk). The project is in collaboration with multiple institutions across Europe, with particular collaborations with the UK Met Office, the University of Leeds, and the British Antarctic Survey.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be responsible for carrying out and analysing climate model simulations from the UKESM Earth system model. The successful candidate will likely spend some extended periods of time at the UK Met Office – the details of which are flexible and can be discussed at interview.

You should apply if

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience in running climate models and/or analysing climate model output, or equivalent.
  • Evidence of scientific excellence.
  • Evidence of the ability to write and publish first-author scientific papers, or equivalent.
